Bogus COHAB/CT Contracts

During the 1990s, Curitiba City’s land regularization programmes, implemented by COHAB-CT, jeopardized thousands of families through misleading contracts of doubtful legal validity in diverse areas occupied by low-income dwellers.

In 2002, the Public Prosecutor’s Office filed a public civil action requiring the contracts made by COHAB since 1994 to be declared null and void because they had charged for land that did not belong to COHAB.

Some 28.5 thousand people were affected by contracts that were annulled in 2010.

Now recognized by Brazilian justice as being null and void, the illegal Land Use Granting Agreements are an impetus to the organization and mobilization of the affected communities in the fight for their violated rights.
